Wheal Martyn China Clay Country Park

Set in 26 acres of woodland nestling in the historic Ruddle Valley on the outskirts of St Austell, Wheal Martyn, the UK's only China Clay museum, provides a fascinating family day out.

The museum is set in the grounds of two former china clay works: Wheal Martyn and Gomm. It gives a fascinating insight into china clay - how it was mined, what it was used for and what it meant for the families who lived in the area.

Much of the museum is situated outdoors, in acres of nature trails. As you walk around the area you can discover the preserved Victorian china clay works, machinery and equipment exhibitions. You will find Cornwall's largest working water wheel, vintage commercial vehicles and locomotive - and a visitor platform overlooking a working china clay pit. There is a Challenge Trail for the children and attractive play areas.

Indoors are interactive displays telling the story of the men, women and children who lived, worked and played in the shadow of the china clay tips.

There is an attractive gift shop and a licensed cafe, open 10am to 5pm, serving breakfasts, light lunches, cakes and ice cream. At the entrance is a contemporary Exhibition area, featuring a variety of exhibitions throughout the year. Access can be made to the gift shop, exhibition area and cafe without paying the entry fee for the site.

Wheal Martyn China Clay Country Park is a beautiful and fascinating place to visit. OPEN DAILY 10 am - 5 pm.
